What Irish Law Actually Requires

Written plainly, with the source named so you can check it yourself.

The law

Section 19 of the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005 requires every employer to identify hazards and assess the risks, and section 20 requires a written safety statement based on those assessments.

What a risk assessment must do

  • Identify the hazards in the workplace
  • Assess the risks to safety, health and welfare
  • Decide and record the control measures
  • Be reviewed when things change

The hierarchy of control

  • Eliminate the hazard
  • Substitute something less hazardous
  • Engineering controls
  • Administrative controls
  • PPE — the last line of defence

Specialist assessments

Some risks — noise, chemicals, fire, confined spaces — may need a more detailed assessment by a competent person. This course gives you the general method.

Be clear about what this course is. It is online training in the general method of risk assessment. Complex or specialist risks may still need a competent person with specific expertise.
